Who No-Gi is for

A grappler in a rash guard working from the back of his partner

What a No-Gi class looks like

  1. Warm-up

Movement and conditioning drills to get you loose and ready to grapple.

  2. Technique

Takedowns, positions and submissions such as chokes, armbars and leg locks, shown step by step.

  3. Drilling

You rep the move with a partner until it starts to feel natural.

  4. Live rounds

Sparring comes later in your training. Beginners learn the basics in a safe setting first.

What it builds

Control without strength
Leverage and angles let you hold down and submit taller, stronger people.
Speed and conditioning
No-Gi moves fast. Cardio and strength work are built into every round.
Confidence
Knowing you can handle yourself on the ground changes how you carry yourself off the mat.
Room to compete
Test yourself against training partners, and enter tournaments if that's your goal.

No-Gi Grappling questions

What's the difference between gi and No-Gi?

In the gi you can grab the uniform, which slows the game down. In No-Gi there is nothing to hold, so grips move to the wrists, neck and legs and the pace is faster.

Do I need jiu-jitsu experience?

No. No-Gi is open to all skill levels, and you can join the beginner class without any jiu-jitsu background.

What do I wear?

A t-shirt or rash guard and athletic shorts or pants with no zippers. A mouthguard and some athletic tape are worth having.

Will I have to spar as a beginner?

No. Beginner sessions teach the basics in a safe setting. Sparring comes later in your training.
